Erm I'm new here, what can I do?

Well plenty actually :-) For example you can...

A) Get involved with the press/PR side of things.
We are building a press team - type the word PRESS and your e-mail address into the message box at the bottom of this page and one of us will contact you.
B) Download the following stuff and go campaigning...
It's surprising how many people still haven't heard about this new Tesco store. We need to contact all the local shopkeepers and generally raise the awareness of this issue in Stoke Newington ASAP. So even if you do nothing else please stick a poster in your front window!

Download: Leaflets, Shop window posters, Home window posters and Local business contact sheets and Local business free listing forms.

Check the campaign zone map to see who is campaigning in each area. We are hoping people choose to work together in teams but if you'd rather work alone please make try and make contact with someone from the zones you're working in anyway so we don't end up duplicating effort.

C) Use your initiative! - Just crack on and write an article, make some new campaign materials, contact your elected representatives, do whatever you think is best - though do try and check if anyone else is doing it already and, if appropriate, try and work with them.

Note: it's also a good idea to register [just click here] if you haven't already. This will allow you to post on the forum, create front page stories and pages on this site and more. Also, we can then mail you when significant developments occur.

We have a facebook group too. If you want to join click the link above or search for "no tesco" on facebook. If you do join please, please make a point of inviting all your friends.

Tescos are coming to Stokey!

Yesterday I saw a notice posted on the side of 39 Stoke Newington High Street, the as yet uninhabited ground floor of the newish block of 'luxury appartments' grafted to the north side of the police station a year or two ago. Imagine my horror upon discovering that it was an application to sell alcohol from none other than the noxious retail behemoth TESCO!

I love Stoke Newington and especially the high street which is blessed with a welcome lack of big brand chain stores. There's a fantastic selection of Grocers, Off-Licenses, Newsagents and general stores all of which stand to suffer from the new Tesco.

WE MUST STOP THEM!

I have created this website to help us organise resistance to this unwelcome new development. Please do what you can to help.

From the top of my head we're going to need people to do the following:

  • Talk to local business owners and gain their support
  • Gather relevant statistics, facts, quotes & photos
  • Write and oppose their licensing application
  • Write letters to council members and the like
  • Design and distribute flyers, posters and stickers
  • Donate money to fund the printing of the above
  • Create articles for this website, text, audio or video
  • Create press releases & speak to the media
  • Protest and picket if and when development starts

I daresay we can do more than this so please sign up to our forum and make your suggestions. Alternatively use the message box at the bottom of the page to contact me directly - though please remember to leave an e-mail address if you want a reply.

Yours, all too sincerely,

Roger Heathcote - Cazenove Road.
